Get Your AC Ready Before DFW Summer — What To Do in April

By May, Dallas temperatures will be pushing 90°F. April is your last comfortable window to get your AC ready — before the rush and before the heat.

April in Dallas-Fort Worth is deceptively pleasant — mild temperatures, occasional rain, and just enough cool mornings to make it easy to forget that 105°F days are only weeks away. That's exactly why April is the most important month for HVAC preparation. Everything you do now costs less, takes less time, and causes less disruption than the same task in July when HVAC companies are running flat-out and your family is suffering in a hot house.

Run Your AC Today — Don't Wait for the First Hot Day

The first thing to do in April is turn your thermostat to cooling mode and run your AC for 15–20 minutes. You want to confirm it turns on, cools to the set temperature, and runs without unusual sounds or odors. An AC that sat unused all winter can have any number of minor issues — pests nesting in the outdoor unit, a tripped circuit breaker from a winter power surge, or a refrigerant leak that developed slowly over the cold months.

Discovering the problem in April means you can address it before the first week of 90°F temperatures — not during it.

Clear the Area Around Your Outdoor Unit

Spring in DFW means cottonwood season, oak pollen, and rapid plant growth. Check that the area around your outdoor condenser unit has at least 18 inches of clearance on all sides. Remove any vegetation that grew up over the winter, clear cottonwood fluff from the coil fins (you can do this gently with a garden hose), and make sure no tree branches hang over the unit. A dirty or blocked condenser coil can reduce efficiency by 10–20% and significantly increase compressor wear in summer heat.

Check and Clean the Condensate Drain Line

Your AC removes humidity from the air inside your home — in DFW, it can remove several gallons of water per day in summer. All of that water drains through the condensate drain line. Over winter, algae and debris can partially block the line. In summer, a blocked drain causes water to back up into the air handler, triggering the safety float switch that shuts down your system.

You can pour a cup of diluted bleach solution into the condensate drain access port near your air handler to help prevent algae growth. A technician can flush the full line with a vacuum during a spring tune-up.

Consider Upgrading Your Thermostat

If you're still using a basic programmable thermostat, April is a good time to upgrade to a smart thermostat before summer. An Ecobee or Nest can be programmed to pre-cool your home before you get home from work — running the AC when electricity is cheaper (off-peak hours) and avoiding the expensive mid-afternoon cooling load. Many DFW utility customers on time-of-use rates save $200–$400 per year with smart scheduling alone.

Schedule Your Tune-Up Now — Don't Wait for May

By mid-April, most DFW HVAC companies are already running full schedules. The homeowners who scheduled their tune-up in March are getting it done. If you haven't called yet, do it this week. A 21-point tune-up in April gives you all summer with a properly-serviced system — and catches failing components before they strand you in the heat.
