How Often Should DFW Homeowners Change HVAC Filters? (The Real Answer)

The “90 days” printed on most filter packages was written for a climate that isn't Texas. Here's what actually applies in DFW.

The number printed on most HVAC filter packages — “replace every 90 days” — is a manufacturing guideline designed for average use in a temperate climate. It is not designed for Dallas-Fort Worth. If you're following that schedule in a DFW home, your filter is almost certainly clogging well before the 90-day mark, and your system is paying the price.

Why DFW Is Harder on Filters

Two factors make DFW uniquely demanding on air filters: runtime and outdoor conditions. Most DFW HVAC systems run 10–14 hours per day from May through October — far more than a system in the Midwest or Northeast. More runtime means more air is being pushed through the filter, and the filter clogs faster.

Additionally, North Texas has significant airborne particulate loads — pollen from cedar, oak, and mountain cedar trees (cedar fever season peaks in January–February), persistent Texas dust, and fine particulate from DFW's dense highway network. These particles clog filter fibers much faster than typical household dust.

The DFW Filter Change Schedule

Based on what NewRise technicians see in hundreds of DFW homes each year, here's a realistic filter change schedule:

  • Standard home, no pets: Every 45–60 days during May–October; every 60–90 days during milder months.
  • Home with one pet: Every 30–45 days year-round.
  • Home with multiple pets or allergy sufferers: Every 20–30 days year-round.
  • Vacation or low-occupancy home: Every 90–120 days.

What Happens When You Don't Change It

A clogged filter restricts airflow through your system. When airflow drops, the evaporator coil can't absorb heat efficiently and the surface temperature drops below freezing — ice starts to form on the coil. Once the coil freezes, your AC stops cooling and the ice can spread to the refrigerant lines and compressor. A compressor damaged by ice formation is a $1,500–$3,500 repair or replacement. A $7 filter change would have prevented it.

In heating mode, a clogged filter causes the heat exchanger to overheat. On gas furnaces, this can crack the heat exchanger — a serious carbon monoxide risk and typically a $1,000–$2,500 repair. Most manufacturers explicitly void the warranty when a system fails due to a clogged filter.

Which MERV Rating Should DFW Homeowners Use?

MERV 11–13 is the right range for most DFW homes. MERV 11 captures pollen, mold spores, and fine dust effectively without significantly restricting airflow. MERV 13 is slightly more restrictive but captures smaller particles including fine dust and some bacteria — a good choice for homes with allergy or asthma sufferers.

Avoid very high-MERV thin panel filters (MERV 14–16 in standard 1” thickness) unless your system was specifically designed for them. These can restrict airflow on most residential systems to the point of causing the same problems as a clogged filter. If you want MERV 16 filtration, ask about an Aprilaire 5000 media cabinet — it achieves that filtration rating without airflow restriction because of its much larger filter surface area.

February: A Good Time to Start Fresh

February in DFW brings cedar fever season near its peak — one of the highest pollen counts in the country. It's also when your system has been running in heating mode for months. Replace your filter now, note the date on the frame with a marker, and set a phone reminder for 45 days out. It takes 30 seconds and it's the single highest-leverage maintenance action you can take.
