HVAC Tips — July

5 Signs Your AC Is About to Fail — What to Watch in July Heat

July is the peak failure month for DFW air conditioners. These warning signs give you a window to act before a breakdown — when you're still in control of the situation.

July is the worst month for an AC failure in Dallas-Fort Worth. Temperatures regularly hit 105–108°F, humidity pushes the heat index even higher, and every HVAC company in the metro is running on a full schedule. When a system fails in July, a homeowner can wait 24–48 hours (or longer) for a non-emergency appointment. Recognizing these warning signs now — while the system is still running — can give you the window to schedule proactively and avoid being stuck in a 90°F house.

Sign 1: Warm Air from the Vents Despite Running

Supply registers should blow air that is noticeably cooler than room temperature — typically 15–20°F cooler than the air entering the return. If you hold your hand near a supply register and the air feels only slightly cool or even warm, something is wrong. Common causes: low refrigerant, a frozen evaporator coil, a failed compressor, or a refrigerant metering device issue. This is not a wait-and-see symptom in July.

Sign 2: The System Is Short Cycling

Short cycling means your AC turns on for 3–5 minutes, shuts off, then turns on again shortly after — repeating this pattern without running a full cooling cycle. The system never reaches its set temperature, the compressor is stressed by frequent starts, and your electricity bill climbs. Short cycling is caused by refrigerant issues, a failing capacitor, an oversized system, or a thermostat problem. A weakening capacitor — very common in Texas heat — can cause this symptom before it fails completely.

Sign 3: Loud or Unusual Sounds

A healthy AC system hums steadily. Warning sounds include: a loud banging or clanking (loose component in the compressor or a failing blower wheel), a high-pitched squealing from the outdoor unit (the fan motor bearing is failing), a grinding noise (compressor or motor bearing failure), or a persistent clicking at startup that doesn't resolve in a few seconds (failed capacitor or relay). In July heat, a grinding noise from the compressor is often an emergency — a seized compressor can fail completely within hours.

Sign 4: Water Around the Air Handler

If you see water pooling near your air handler or notice water stains on the ceiling below an attic unit, your condensate drain is blocked. In July, a DFW home's AC removes 20–30+ gallons of moisture from the air per day. All of that water has to go somewhere. A blocked condensate drain causes water to back up and overflow — damaging ceilings, drywall, and the air handler itself. The safety float switch is supposed to shut the system down when this happens, but float switches fail too. Don't wait to address standing water near your HVAC equipment.

Sign 5: Ice on the Refrigerant Lines or Outdoor Unit

Ice forming on the copper refrigerant lines coming out of your indoor air handler, or on the outdoor unit itself, is a sign of restricted airflow (clogged filter or coil) or low refrigerant. Ice formation is counterintuitive — you might think it means the system is cooling too well. In reality, it means the refrigerant is expanding too much because of low charge or reduced airflow, and the moisture in the air is freezing on the coil surface. Ice blocks airflow further, compounding the problem. If you see ice, turn the system to “fan only” mode (not cooling) to let it thaw, then call for service.

What to Do If You Notice Any of These Signs

Call a technician before the failure progresses. Every one of these warning signs represents a system operating under stress. In July heat, that stress accelerates — what is a minor repair today can become a compressor replacement ($2,000–$4,000) in a week. NewRise offers same-day service across DFW and Comfort Club members receive priority scheduling.
