HVAC Tips — March

Spring AC Tune-Up Checklist for Dallas-Fort Worth Homes

DFW summer arrives fast. A professional tune-up in March or April means your system is ready when temperatures spike — not scrambling to repair it in June.

In Dallas-Fort Worth, the cooling season begins in earnest by May and the first 100°F days often arrive before June is over. That gives you a narrow window in March and April to tune up your AC system before every HVAC contractor in DFW is booked out a week or more. Homeowners who schedule their spring tune-up early get the best appointment times, the freshest technician attention, and — most importantly — the peace of mind that their system has been checked before the season that matters most.

What a Professional Spring Tune-Up Includes

A real tune-up is not a visual inspection with a checklist box checked. At NewRise, our 21-point spring tune-up covers:

  • Thermostat calibration: Verify the thermostat reads the correct temperature and cycles the system accurately.
  • Refrigerant level check: Measure system pressures (suction and discharge) to confirm proper refrigerant charge. Low refrigerant means the system can't cool effectively and runs longer, raising your bill.
  • Evaporator coil inspection: Check for mold growth, blockage, or ice formation evidence from the previous season.
  • Condenser coil cleaning: The outdoor coil accumulates a winter's worth of dust, cottonwood, and debris. A dirty condenser coil can reduce efficiency by 15–20%.
  • Capacitor and contactor testing: Capacitors degrade over time and are one of the most common failure points in Texas heat. Testing in spring catches a weakening capacitor before it fails at 105°F in July.
  • Electrical connection tightening: Loose connections cause arcing and component damage. All electrical terminals are checked and torqued to spec.
  • Blower motor and belt inspection: The blower moves air through your entire system. A worn belt or failing motor reduces airflow and system performance.
  • Condensate drain flush: Algae grows in condensate drains during the warm months. A blocked drain causes water damage and triggers the safety float switch — shutting down your AC. Flushing it in spring prevents mid-summer shutoffs.
  • Airflow measurement: We measure actual airflow from supply registers to confirm the system is moving the right amount of conditioned air through your home.
  • System start-up test: We cycle the system through a full cooling run while monitoring temperatures, pressures, and electrical draw to confirm everything is within spec.

What Happens When You Skip the Spring Tune-Up

The most common summer HVAC calls we receive in July and August are for capacitor failures, refrigerant leaks discovered after the system runs all summer in a partially-charged state, and clogged condensate drains. Nearly all of these are detectable — and fixable at low cost — during a spring tune-up. By July, the repair cost is higher, appointment availability is limited, and your family has likely been uncomfortable for days before the call gets made.

The Best Time to Schedule: March or Early April

By late April, most DFW HVAC companies are running full schedules. March appointments are the best — your system gets serviced on a comfortable day (not in the heat), technician schedules are open, and any parts needed are readily available without the summer supply crunch. If you've been putting this off, the right time is now.
